Kurdistan President, PM, Speaker Meet with Macron in Erbil
French President Emmanuel Macron was received on Sunday by his Kurdistan Region's counterpart Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayiq in Erbil.
Macron arrived in Erbil on Sunday early morning after his journey to Baghdad where he joined several other leaders of the regional countries to attend the Baghdad Conference for Development and Cooperation.
Following their meeting, the Kurdish president pointed out at a joint press conference that bilateral ties between the Kurdistan Region and France were discussed during the meeting.
Barzani added that the Kurdistan Region is looking forward to working closely with France in different fields.
"While in Erbil, I reiterated our commitment to supporting Kurdistan for the war against ISIS," Macron said. "There is a historic relationship between the people of France and Kurdistan Region."
He also commended the Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Region for fighting terrorism in the region.
Macron, after his arrival in Erbil on Sunday early morning, headed to Mosul, where he visited the Our Lady of the Hour Church in Mosul and the famous Nouri Mosque and met with religious leaders, discussing prolonged challenges and ways to stabilize the region for a safe return of the IDPs.
"Thank God, Kurdistan Region embraced and protected us," Nicodemus Daoud Matti Sharaf, the Syro-Orthodox Metropolitan of Mosul, Kirkuk and Kurdistan Region, said during his meeting with President Macron.
The French president is expected to meet with the Kurdish prominent leader, and former President of the Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, in Erbil.
