An official reveals the reasons for the high price of gasoline in the Kurdistan Region

ARK News… The Natural Resources Committee of the Kurdistan Parliament revealed on Monday efforts to reduce the price of gasoline after its recent increase.

Committee member Rebwar Babiki told Kurdistan 24 that taxes are one of the most important reasons that led to the rise in gasoline prices across the region.

The price of a liter of (regular) gasoline reached 750 dinars in most gas stations in Erbil. The price fell to 450 dinars in April 2020.

Babiki pointed out that the concerned authorities will reduce taxes on gasoline and in return will oblige traders to reduce its price and raise its quality.

He continued, "We spoke with the Minister of Natural Resources about the increase in the price of gasoline, and we put forward a number of proposals, including a proposal to reduce taxes on fuel."

Babiki added that the Ministry of Natural Resources will decide to reduce taxes, provided that traders abide by international standards and the ministry's laws on fuel, especially gasoline.

He said that the Ministry of Natural Resources should establish its own fuel depot in order to control the market and stabilize gasoline prices and not to manipulate them.

In March 2021, Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw announced that he had made strenuous efforts to reduce the price of gasoline after he witnessed a sudden rise throughout the region.

Khoshnaw said at the time that the jump in the price of gasoline was "temporary".
