President Barzani recalls the 74th anniversary of the epic crossing of the Aras River
ARK News… President Masoud Barzani on Friday recalled the 74th anniversary of the epic crossing of the Aras River by the Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani from Iranian territory towards the Soviet Union, accompanied by a number of his fellow fighters.
President Barzani said in a message, "Today marks the 74th anniversary of the historic epic of Barzani's immortal crossing of the Aras River, accompanied by a number of his fellow fighters."
The leader Mustafa Barzani had responded to the call of Qazi Muhammad in 1946 to join and support his compatriots in establishing the Democratic Republic of Kurdistan in the city of Mahabad, accompanied by his path comrades from the Peshmerga fighters, in order to defend the fledgling republic.
After the collapse of the Republic of Mahabad, leader Mustafa Barzani refused to surrender to the Iranian and Iraqi forces and decided to resort to the Soviet Union on foot accompanied by 500 fighters.
And it was necessary to cross the Aras River to reach Soviet territory, and as they walked and in very difficult circumstances, they clashed with Iranian, Iraqi, and Turkish forces and were able to cross the river despite the great disparity in weapons, equipment, and the number of fighters.
President Barzani added in his message that "this national military historical epic has become a great legacy and has greatly affected the continuation of the just cause of the Kurdish people in that stage and subsequent stages."
President Barzani said, "This historical epic was a rejection of occupation and slavery, a yearning for emancipation and hope for liberation, and it proved that the will of our people will prevail and that the will of our people is stronger than all weapons and armies.
