Residents of 13 villages have been vacated in the past few weeks after the war between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party further intensified in the border areas of Duhok, Kurdistan Region.

Amedi Mayor Ismail Mustafa told BasNews that Kesta village was evacuated on Tuesday night after Turkey heavily bombarded the vicinity of the village.

“There were 16 families in Kesta village, and they all moved to neighbor villages yesterday after a heavy clash erupted between the PKK and Turkish army,” Mustafa said.

The official said the locals blame the PKK for attracting the Turkish airstrikes with their presence in the civilian-populated areas.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has, on multiple occasions, asked the conflicting sides to leave its territories as the war has left dozens of civilians killed and hundreds of villages abandoned over the past few decades.
