setting April 22 of every year as the Kurdish Press Day

Apr 22 2021

The Kurdistan Parliament, in its session on Wednesday, set April 22 of every year as a day for the Kurdish press.

Setting this day came based on a proposal from the concerned authorities and the parliamentary culture and media committees after consulting with those authorities, and with the support of 101 out of 111 deputies.

The decision to set the day of the Kurdish press, consisting of 4 main paragraphs and the reasons for the positive, will enter into force after its publication in the official Kurdistan Gazette.

Today, Thursday, April 22, 2021, coincides with the 123rd anniversary of the issuance of the first issue of a Kurdish newspaper, which was born by Miqdad Midhat Badirkhan in the Egyptian capital Cairo under the name "Kurdistan" on April 22, 1898, despite the harassment he was subjected to by the occupied countries for Kurdistan.

The publication of the first issue of the newspaper represented an important turning point in the political, cultural, and social arena, of which the people of Kurdistan are proud.

The first issue was published in the Kurdish language, in the northern “Kurmanci” dialect, and in Arabic letters, and it was published twice a month and in four pages, and 31 issues were issued within four years and in sporadic numbers until the year 1902 AD.

Issues 1, 2, and 3 of the newspaper were printed in the Egyptian Dar Al-Hilal presses, and numbers 4 and 5 were printed in the Kurdistan Press in Cairo and belong to the Kurdish cultural figure, the scholar Sheikh Faraj Allah Zaki Al-Kurdi, and the other issues were printed outside Egypt due to the pressure exerted by the Ottoman authorities to close the newspaper, and its headquarters were moved to Geneva in Switzerland and the numbers from 6 to 19 were printed in it, and numbers from 20 to 23 were returned to Kurdistan Press in Cairo after returning its headquarters to the Egyptian capital.

As for the number 24, it was printed in the British capital, London, and the numbers 25 to 29 were printed in Folk stone, and numbers 30 and 31, of course, are in Geneva again. The last issue was published on April 14, 1902.
