Kurdistan President Calls for Wider Role of UN in Iraq in Formal Letter to Guterres
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has sent a formal letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, calling for a wider role of the UN in mediating between Erbil and Baghdad.
"In a formal letter addressed to the @UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and members of the UN Security Council, @IKRPresident urges the international community to grant the @UNIraq additional powers to mediate between @IraqiGovt & KRG in the disputes over pending issues," Barzani's office said in a statement.
The Kurdish president in his letter has stressed the implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution in addition to resolving the issues related to the oil sector and revenues, according to the statement.
He has also expressed support for Baghdad’s request for a greater role of the UN Security Council in the process of Iraqi parliamentary elections scheduled for the upcoming October.
Barzani, in the meantime, called for official support of the UNSC for the efforts to implement the recent agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government on the budget bill.
The Kurdish leader also called for additional humanitarian aid and greater support for the displaced in the Kurdistan Region so to improve their living conditions in the camps.
