Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday received a US diplomatic delegation led by Deputy Special Envoy to Syria, David Brownstein, to discuss closer cooperation between the sides to fight against the Islamic State (IS).

"Pleased to receive today David Brownstein, US Deputy Special Envoy to Syria," PM Barzani said in a statement released by his office. "We discussed the latest developments in Iraq and Syria and further cooperation with the international coalition to confront ISIS."

Barzani and Brownstein also exchanged views on the importance of continued support for the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces in efforts to fight the Islamic State in the region.

"We emphasized the importance of supporting the Peshmerga forces to confront ISIS, which is still a serious threat in many areas of Iraq and Syria," the statement added.

"We also reaffirmed our support for the talks of Kurdish parties of Syria towards ensuring the national rights of the Kurdish people within Syria."
