The European Union and Canada after America… The Refugee Conference is facing international rejection

ARK News… The European Union announced its refusal to attend the Damascus Refugee Conference, to be held on November 11 and 12.

A number of European Union foreign ministers and its High Representative received an invitation to attend a conference on the issue of the return of refugees, before they refused it, according to a statement issued by the Union on Tuesday, November 10.

The Federation considered that the conference is premature, considering that the priority at the present time is to take real measures to create the conditions for the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their areas of origin.

The federation stated that while the decision to return should always be an individual decision, conditions in Syria are not, at present, suitable to encourage voluntary return on a large scale, in conditions of safety and dignity in line with international law.

He added that the limited returns that have occurred illustrate many of the obstacles and threats that still face the return of displaced persons and refugees, especially forced recruitment, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, physical and sexual violence, and discrimination in access to housing, land, and property, in addition to the weakness or lack of basic services.

The Federation affirmed that UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254 defines the framework for a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Syrian conflict, and addresses the underlying causes of the conflict, the refugee crisis, and internal displacement.
