James Jeffrey leaves office and confirms the continuity of the American policy in Syria
ARK News… Reports said that the US envoy to Syria James Jeffrey has contacted a number of his European counterparts, Arab officials, and Syrian opposition figures in the past hours, to inform them of the end of his duties and to confirm that "American policy will continue" if the candidate, Joe Biden, wins the American presidency.
Joel Rayborn, who was present with him in most of his contacts and meetings after assuming his position in mid-2018, will assume the position during this period, as a special coordinator at the Foreign Ministry for the Syrian file and a representative of Washington in the international coalition against "ISIS".
European officials said: "This is an indication of the continuation of the policy in the current stage until the formation of the American administration."
Since taking his official position, Jeffrey (75 years old) has contributed to formulating the American policy towards Syria, and it includes a series of elements, namely: The military presence in the north-east of the country to ensure the continued defeat of ISIS, the Kurdish-Kurdish dialogue, the continuation of the economic sanctions campaign through the "law." Caesar »and external pressures, communicating with Arab and European countries to prevent normalization with Damascus, providing support to Turkey in northwestern Syria and supporting Israel in its raids on“ Iranian sites ”in Syria.
European officials said that Jeffrey "is among those who believe that these pressures have succeeded in exacerbating the economic crisis, increasing the pressure on Russia and drowning it in the Syrian quagmire." He said more than once that the "maximum pressure campaign" on Damascus aims to achieve a series of goals, which are: "Weakening Iranian influence, giving up chemical weapons, not threatening neighboring countries, not supporting terrorism, implementing Resolution 2254 and providing conditions for the return of refugees and displaced people, in addition to questioning and accountability."
Jeffrey told his European counterparts in farewell communications that the current US policy towards Syria "will continue" regardless of the election results. He added: “We want to see the PKK cadres leave Syria. This is a major reason for the tension with Turkey in the northeast. We want to reduce this tension, because in all other regions except the northeast, we have very close coordination with Turkey regarding the Syrian situation. ”
