ARK News.. Today marks the fortieth anniversary of the massacre of Tadmur prison located 200 km northeast of the Syrian capital, Damascus, which was carried out by the Defense Brigades, led by Rifaat al-Assad, against the prisoners in Tadmur Prison, one day after an attempt to assassinate Hafez al-Assad.

According to the Syrian Human Rights Committee, the Al-Saraya and a group of 138th Brigade members arrived by helicopter, coming from Al-Mazzeh Military Airport, at Tadmur Prison at 6:30 am on June 27, 1980, and upon their arrival, about 60 members were sent towards the prison dormitories. , While a group remained at the helicopters that took them.

Every 6 to 7 officers took over the entrance to the dormitory, and each of the prisoners was killed. The number of victims, according to the commission’s estimates, reached about 1,200 detainees. The massacre was carried out in less than an hour.

The Syrian Human Rights Committee stated that this massacre showed "the nature of the mafia mentality that governs the Al-Assad regime, and which in their view justifies the implementation of an integrated military operation against defenseless prisoners, as a supposed type of revenge."
