U.S. Issues Urgent Security Alert for American Citizens Across the Middle East
Welat TV – Erbil
The Embassy of the United States, Baghdad, and the U.S. Consulate General, Erbil, have issued an urgent security alert for U.S. citizens across the Middle East, citing escalating regional tensions and the possibility of unexpected military escalation.
In a diplomatic security advisory released on Saturday, August 1, 2026, the U.S. missions warned that the regional security environment remains complex and rapidly evolving, cautioning that widespread disruptions to air travel could occur, including sudden flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures.
The embassy urged American citizens in the region to seriously consider departing or to be fully prepared to leave should the security situation deteriorate further.
The advisory also warned that potential threats are no longer confined to the Middle East, noting that U.S. diplomatic facilities, businesses, and American interests could become targets in other parts of the world.
The statement accused Iran of being "unpredictable in its actions," warning that Tehran and Iran-backed groups could target American companies, institutions, and citizens internationally.
It further stated that Iran has expanded the geographical scope of its military operations, reaching areas that had not previously been targeted, citing Egypt as an example of this broader expansion and alleging that attacks had been carried out without prior warning or clear justification.
Regarding Iraq, the embassy advised U.S. citizens to maintain the highest level of vigilance, closely monitor local media, and strictly follow instructions issued by Iraqi security authorities.
The advisory also included public safety guidance, urging Americans to immediately seek shelter in the event of an attack, avoid approaching missile debris or falling objects, and remember that the absence of previous attacks in a particular country does not guarantee its safety amid the current regional volatility.
