ARK News… President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani today, Sunday, April 14, 2024, affirmed the comprehensive efforts to gain recognition of the Anfal campaign as a genocide at the international level, calling on the federal government to fulfill its duty in ensuring justice and compensating the victims from all angles.

This came in a statement issued by the President of the Kurdistan Region on the anniversary of the Anfal operations.

The text of the statement is as follows:

Today marks the painful 36th anniversary of the notorious Anfal campaign, in which more than 182,000 Kurdish men, women, and children fell victim—one of the most heinous crimes and genocidal operations in history. These martyred victims perished in 1988 at the hands of the Baghdad regime at that time, and the repercussions of that campaign persist to this day and will continue. On this occasion, we remember these victims with all reverence and respect, bowing in homage to their pure souls.

While the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court recognized this crime as genocide, we renew our call to the federal Iraqi government to fulfill its duty in ensuring justice and compensating the victims comprehensively. We also emphasize the necessity of providing better services to the steadfast families of the Anfal victims in all areas and ensuring no negligence in providing them with everything possible.

We reassure the dear families of the Anfal victims that we will continue until the end in the process of locating the martyrs' remains and returning them to the embrace of the homeland. Furthermore, we emphasize our comprehensive efforts to gain recognition of the Anfal campaign as a genocide at the international level and to ensure that such a crime is not repeated anywhere in the world.

On this anniversary, we stress the solidarity and cohesion of all parties and components in Kurdistan, which is an essential condition for protecting and preserving the rights, achievements, federalism, and constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region. May the memory of the martyrs be eternal, and peace be upon their pure souls, with greetings to the families and relatives of the Anfal victims and to all the martyrs of Kurdistan.
