President Barzani: There are chauvinistic voices within the Iraqi state that continue to antagonize the Kurds to this day

ARK News… President Masoud Barzani issued a statement today, Sunday, 14/4/2024, on the occasion of the notorious Anfal campaigns anniversary, stating that official institutions in the Iraqi state must work towards compensating for all Anfal crimes, genocide, and injustices against the Kurdish people.

The text of the statement is as follows:

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

The Anfal campaign was one of the biggest crimes of the former Iraqi regime, aimed at erasing, exterminating, and annihilating the Kurdish people. Throughout those systematic and staged mass killings and genocide, which occurred in several phases and affected all regions of Kurdistan, 180,000 innocent Kurdish citizens were martyred or went missing. Kurdistan was also subjected to chemical weapons bombardment, the destruction of thousands of villages, Arabization plans, forced displacement, and the destruction of economic, demographic, social, and moral infrastructure as part of those crimes committed by the Iraqi regime deliberately and systematically against our people.

It is true that the perpetrators of the Anfal and other crimes faced defeat and failure, and their fate was consigned to the dustbin of history; however, the effects and consequences of those genocides and injustices inflicted upon our people are still present, and their wounds have not yet healed. Despite the great injustice suffered by our people, unfortunately, we still see chauvinistic voices within the Iraqi state that continue to antagonize the Kurds to this day.

It is the duty and responsibility of official institutions in the Iraqi state to compensate for all Anfal crimes, genocide, and injustices against the Kurdish people, and all sinister efforts and policies that view the rights of the Kurdish people from a chauvinistic and denial perspective must be prevented.

On the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Anfal crimes, we stand in respect and admiration for the sacrifices and steadfastness of the families of the victims and martyrs. Greetings and peace be upon the souls of the righteous Anfal martyrs and all martyrs in the path of Kurdistan's liberation.

Masoud Barzani
