Assad Regime Detains Dozens of Returnees in Eastern Rural Deir Ezzor

ARK News: The Assad regime forces have detained dozens of civilians in the villages and towns of eastern rural Deir Ezzor who have recently returned to their homes following months of displacement due to fighting in the region.

According to local media outlets, the Assad regime’s Military Security branch on Friday set up checkpoints in the town of Albuleil and the village of Zabari in eastern rural Deir Ezzor and detained about 35 civilians.

The Assad regime did not give reasons for the arrests which targeted civilians who have recently returned to their homes following the end of fighting between the Assad regime and the ISIS extremist group.

On 25 September, the Assad regime detained several civilians in the town of Subaikhan in eastern rural Deir Ezzor.

These arrests coincided with intensifying arrest campaigns the Assad regime have recently launched in other parts across Syria, especially in the areas whose residents were forced to agree to the so-called settlement deals with the Assad regime. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said in a recent report that the majority of arbitrary arrests were targeting former regime opponents who agreed to the so-called settlement deals.

Activists expressed concern that the detainees might be subjected to brutal torture and summary executions, stressing that the Assad regime has violated all deals and agreements as it looks determined to eliminate all opposition to its rule.

The Syrian Coalition earlier said that the Assad regime’s security services would not stop violations against civilians unless it is subjected to real pressure by the international community. It pointed out those gross violations confirmed the falsehood of the Russian allegations about providing guarantees for civilians returning to their homes.
